Rating CriteriaOverview, Location & ContactMember Reviews

This small eatery is primarily a vegan oasis (so no dairy/butter/cheese) focusing on organic cold pressed juices, organic green smoothies, seasonal salads, soups and specialty coffees. They do offer chicken and eggs which can also be added to any selection. This WAPFer had no problem finding several options. They will eagerly customize menu items to accommodate your special needs. The house-made juices are sold in Mason jars, with a returnable deposit. Order at the counter. They seem to do a lot of take-out, but location has a pleasant but simple, hard surfaced eating area with large windows and seats about 12. A sink in the dining area invites you to bus your own dishes, and people do it.

Rating Criteria

1. From Scratch: Serves mostly (i.e., more than half of the menu) fresh food, prepared from scratch. Does NOT rely primarily on kits or prepared/partially prepared foods from commercial food services.
Yes
Comments: All salads and other items e.g. granola are made from scratch.
2. Local/Organic: Offers at least some locally sourced and/or organically produced food and/or wild-caught seafood.
Yes
Comments: All produce is organic. They use Mary's chicken, which is OK but not what I would use in my own kitchen. Eggs are organic. I have emailed to find out if Mary's or egg provider uses soy. (Cafe owner is opposed to soy, so hopefully not.)
3. Pastured: Offers at least some pastured animal foods.
No
Comments: This is not their focus.
4. Organs: Offers some dishes made with organ meats (liver/paté, sweetbreads, heart, kidney, brains, etc.).
Yes
Comments: Not their focus.
5. Cooking Fats: Cooks (sautés) in natural fats such as butter, lard, tallow, duck fat, coconut oil, or olive oil; uses lard, duck fat, or tallow for frying.
Yes
Comments: They would not use butter or other animal fats, but they do use coconut and olive oil. I am checking to see if they use avocado or any other oils.
6. Bone Broth: Makes own bone broths/stocks for use in soups, stews, gravies, and sauces (does NOT use canned broth or powdered soup bases).
Yes
Comments: The vegetable stock and soups are made in house and looked bright and fresh for sale in the Grab N Go case. They also offer Kitchen Witch chicken and beef broths for service and retail. https://www.kitchenwitchbroth.com/ You can get a hot cup of these broths. Even though Kitchen Witch is a purchased product, it is not a canned or powdered processed product. I think they deserve this spoon.
7. Seasonings: Makes most of its own seasoning mixes (does NOT use flavoring packets or MSG).
Yes
Comments: Owner not available, but checking to learn if spices used are organic. With strong focus on organics, this is hopefully a yes. They do not use any commercially manufactured flavoring packets.
8. Salad oils: Makes most of its own salad dressings using olive oil or cold-pressed sesame oil.
Yes
Comments: They make their own salad dressings. Five of their six dressings use olive oil. One of them uses expeller-pressed medium heat refined sesame oil.
9. Breads: Offers genuine sourdough bread.
No
Comments: They don't offer any breads. Instead they substitute cauliflower "toasts" in several menu items.
10. Beverages: Offers lacto-fermented beverages (such as kombucha or kvass).
Yes
Comments: Yes! They have 3 types of kombucha on tap, House,GT's, and another I am checking on the brand. The flavors may change periodically.
11. Condiments: Offers lacto-fermented condiments.
Yes
Comments: There were no LAB ferments e.g. krauts, on the menu. But you could buy vegan coconut yogurt from the Grab N Go case.
12. Desserts: Offers desserts made with natural sweeteners (such as raw honey, maple syrup, maple sugar, molasses, date sugar, palm sugar, coconut sugar, sorghum syrup, or malt syrup).
Yes
Comments: They offered several sweetened drinks and tasties using honey or maple syrup.

This was my first experience eating at Detox Kitchen, and I’ll go back if I am in that area because there were more items on the menu I would like to try. My tasty and generous spaghetti squash bowl was more than I could eat. Lisa Smith (former chapter leader) enjoyed her cauliflower toast as well. She even thought her middle-schoolers would like it. Lisa also tried one of the fresh juices with spinach and cucumber. Fresh and tasty. We were both surprised by the strong emphasis on raw veggies from the brassica family (possible goitrogens), but you can substitute other greens. Quite a few other snack and non-food items were available, some I had not seen, aimed at helping you move to a healthier lifestyle. I am not opposed to the vegan diet. It can be beneficial if used as a temporary cleanse and not as a lifestyle. But I would not review a purely vegan restaurant here. Because the chicken and egg options are available and can be added to any menu choice, a WAPFer would be able to eat here. I missed the healthy fats, though. Maybe next time I’ll bring along some parmesano reggiano to add to my entree.
