Matt's thinks that food tastes better when prepared simply with better ingredients. That’s why they search out items to serve in their restaurant that are of a very high quality.

They use only cage-free eggs from humanely raised chickens. They do use grain- fed Iowa pork and beef. They use local organic produce where appropriate and possible. They believe that food prepared this way not only tastes better but is better for you.

Rating Criteria

1. From Scratch: Serves mostly (i.e., more than half of the menu) fresh food, prepared from scratch. Does NOT rely primarily on kits or prepared/partially prepared foods from commercial food services.
Yes
Comments: Everything at Matt's is cooked from scratch. Amazing Breakfast... Farm fresh ingredients.. Friendly staff.

The fluffy, buttery, light griddlecakes are never made from generic ingredients and the attention to detail shows. Matt’s griddlecakes are made using King Arthur flour, Rumford baking powder, cage-free eggs, whole milk, real butter and sea salt. Those six ingredients whisked together hundreds of times each morning have always stayed the same.

To top it all off, drizzle the 100 percent real maple syrup over the top. They syrup is served hot, so it melts the butter before the first bite.
2. Local/Organic: Offers at least some locally sourced and/or organically produced food and/or wild-caught seafood.
Yes
Comments: Made-from-scratch Belgian-style waffle, sweet cream butter and real maple syrup (2 oz.) with two slices of thick-cut bacon.
3. Pastured: Offers at least some pastured animal foods.
Yes
Comments: Hand-pressed Niman Ranch ground chuck (half-pound) grilled in butter, topped with American cheese* (substitute Maytag blue cheese - $1.00) All of their bacon is hand rubbed with salt and spices every week, dry cured and smoked in a smokehouse with no artificial flavor added.
4. Organs: Offers some dishes made with organ meats (liver/paté, sweetbreads, heart, kidney, brains, etc.).
No
5. Cooking Fats: Cooks (sautés) in natural fats such as butter, lard, tallow, duck fat, coconut oil, or olive oil; uses lard, duck fat, or tallow for frying.
Yes
6. Bone Broth: Makes own bone broths/stocks for use in soups, stews, gravies, and sauces (does NOT use canned broth or powdered soup bases).
Yes
7. Seasonings: Makes most of its own seasoning mixes (does NOT use flavoring packets or MSG).
Yes
Comments: They make all their own sauces, jams, and jellies.
8. Salad oils: Makes most of its own salad dressings using olive oil or cold-pressed sesame oil.
No
Comments: They do not offer salads. This is breakfast only.
9. Breads: Offers genuine sourdough bread.
Yes
Comments: A favorite item to get there is the cheese omelette (you can ask for it to be scrambled) with mushrooms, a side of the house potatoes, and sourdough toast. They serve all omelette dishes with 3 eggs so it's definitely a generous portion. Same for the potatoes, you'll get quite a bit of those as well, and they offer you an option of regular hash browns or the house potatoes. The house potatoes have lots of seasoning & taste different with rosemary. Even the toast tastes great as it's thick cut sourdough, and they serve it with yummy homemade preserves.
10. Beverages: Offers lacto-fermented beverages (such as kombucha or kvass).
No
Comments: The strawberry lemonade is made daily from fresh fruit and cane sugar. The orange juice is fresh squeezed from local oranges.
11. Condiments: Offers lacto-fermented condiments.
No
Comments: Some condiments are organic. Sea salt is used.
12. Desserts: Offers desserts made with natural sweeteners (such as raw honey, maple syrup, maple sugar, molasses, date sugar, palm sugar, coconut sugar, sorghum syrup, or malt syrup).
No
Comments: Dessert is not offered.
